Sippy Cups to Promote Speech Development

If you feel stressed about choosing the best sippy cup for your child, you’re not alone. Many parents don’t give it ENOUGH thought. The market is huge for sippy cups, and companies are looking to cash-in but are not necessarily considering the best interests of your child. Yes, a no-spill sippy cup sounds like a wonderful invention. But, have you thought about the way that cup/spout can affect your child’s facial growth and speech development?

Hallie Bulkin, a feeding specialist, emphasizes that the “suckling” motion required for traditional sippy cups can negatively impact oral motor development, potentially leading to issues with tongue posture, swallowing, and even speech development. (Hallie Bulkin, “Skip the Sippy”, August 14, 2024, https://halliebulkin.com/skip-the-sippy.)

What to Consider in Sippy Cups

The purpose of a sippy cup is to provide a transition from breast or bottle, to regular open cup drinking.

Introduce an open cup and straw cup at the same time you introduce a sippy cup, allowing your child to gradually adapt to a new style of drinking.

You can introduce a cup at around 6 months of age, or when your child is able to sit independently.

Prolonged use of a sippy cup can lead to low and forward tongue posture, which potentially contributes to open mouth posture, narrow palates, and misaligned teeth.

I recommend beginning to transition away from sippy cups around 10 months of age, or when a child starts being able to hold and manipulate an open cup, or straw cup.

Not all cups will be appropriate for all children. Ultimately a cup that enhances the most natural and safe swallow, drinking efficiency and independence, is the best choice. The best choice may be different for each child depending on their unique situation.

If you are that parent that just can’t handle another spill, then let them practice open cup drinking in the bathtub (minus the bubbles, of course!).

If you already have concerns for your child’s communication or feeding skills and want professional input, seek out

If your toddler isn’t talking yet or seems behind in their communication skills, you’re not alone and you’re not overthinking it. Many parents wonder if their child is just developing at their own pace or if it might be time to seek support. Knowing when to consider speech therapy and understanding what to expect from the process can make a big difference in your child's development.

Every child grows at their own pace, but there are common milestones that signal healthy speech and language development. If your child is missing some of these, a speech-language evaluation might be helpful:

           What Happens During Speech Therapy

Speech therapy isn’t just about practicing sounds. It’s about giving your toddler the tools to express themselves and interact with the world. Here’s what you can typically expect from a therapy process:

           Initial Evaluation

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) will start by getting a full picture of your child’s development. This usually includes:

Parent interviews to understand language milestones and concerns

Structured play to observe communication behaviors

            Standardized speech and language assessments

This evaluation helps determine your child’s specific needs and the best approach for therapy.

           Ongoing Therapy Sessions

Therapy for toddlers is designed to be fun, interactive, and age-appropriate. It often includes:

           How Parents Play a Role

Therapists are experts, but parents are the MVPs when it comes to helping toddlers thrive. Your involvement will be a key part of your child’s success. That includes:

Attending sessions or sitting in to learn strategies

            Practicing language-building activities at home

Keeping an open line of communication with your child’s therapist

You’ll learn how to naturally integrate speech goals into your everyday routines—like bath time, mealtime, or playtime.

           Tracking Growth and Noticing Progress

One of the most rewarding parts of speech therapy is seeing your child start to use new words, express needs more clearly, and feel more confident. Progress is often gradual but steady. Over time, you’ll likely see improvements in:

            Vocabulary and word combinations

            Ability to follow directions

Confidence in social situations and play

            Clarity and pronunciation

Your therapist will regularly assess these areas and adjust goals as your toddler grows.

           Getting Started

If you're considering speech therapy, here are a few steps to help you move forward:

Talk to your pediatrician to share concerns and ask about a referral.

Research providers who specialize in speech therapy for toddlers in Devils Lake or search for language development therapy near me.

Schedule a speech-language evaluation with a licensed therapist.

Ask questions, stay involved, and celebrate the small wins along the way.

Speech therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each toddler has a unique communication journey, and the earlier support begins, the better the outcomes often are.

Understanding the Early Signs and What to Do Next

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone. So when something feels off, especially in how they speak or communicate, it’s only natural to be concerned. Maybe your toddler isn’t saying many words yet, or your preschooler is difficult to understand. These are common worries, and in many cases, early intervention can make a big difference. If you're in the area, looking into speech therapy for kids in Devils Lake could be a helpful next step in supporting your child’s communication development.

But how can you tell the difference between a late bloomer and a child who might benefit from therapy? Let’s take a closer look at what’s considered typical, and what might be a sign to seek support.

           What’s Considered Normal Speech Development?

Every child develops at their own pace, but general milestones offer a helpful guide.

By 12 months: Your child may begin saying a few simple words like “mama” or “dada,” and respond to their name.

By 18 months: Vocabulary typically grows to 10–20 words. Children at this age also begin using gestures and copying sounds.

By 2 years: Your child may be combining two words ("want milk," "go outside") and using 50+ words.

By 3 years: Most kids can be understood by familiar adults about 75% of the time.

By 4 years: Your child should be forming complete sentences and be mostly understandable, even to unfamiliar people.

If your child is significantly behind in these areas, it might be time to explore options like speech delay therapy to support their development.

Signs Your Child Might Need Help

Speech and language issues can appear in many forms. Here are a few common signs that might indicate a need for therapy:

            Limited vocabulary for their age

            Trouble combining words into sentences

            Difficulty understanding or following directions

            Slurred or unclear speech

            Frustration when trying to communicate

Lack of interest in talking or social interaction

It’s also important to consider how your child’s speech is affecting daily life. Are they struggling to connect with peers, participate in school, or express their needs clearly? If so, reaching out to a professional may be the next right step.

           What Does Speech Therapy Involve?

Speech therapy is more than just practicing sounds—it’s a customized approach based on a child’s unique needs. A licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) evaluates a child’s communication skills and creates a plan to help them strengthen those skills through engaging, age-appropriate activities.

For example, a therapist might work with a toddler on building vocabulary through play, or help a school-aged child improve sentence structure and pronunciation. In some cases, therapy may also focus on comprehension, memory, or social communication.

If you’re looking for support that fits your family’s needs and schedule, private speech therapy in Devils Lake offers a more flexible, personalized experience. This kind of one-on-one support can be especially helpful for kids who need a bit of extra attention or a tailored approach.

           The Sooner, the Better

One of the biggest myths parents hear is, “They’ll grow out of it.” While that might be true for some children, waiting too long to act can make it harder to catch up later—especially when school and social pressures increase. Early intervention allows children to build strong communication skills while their brains are still in a critical stage of development.

And don’t worry, starting therapy doesn’t mean your child will be in it forever. Many kids only need support for a short period before they make big strides and catch up with their peers.
